When to Go

Any time of the year is the right time to visit Los Angeles. From November to May, you can find crisp, sunny, unusually smog-free days. December to April is the rainy season, but storms are usually brief, followed by brilliant skies. Dining alfresco, sailing, and catching a concert under the stars—these are reserved for L.A. summers, which are virtually rainless (with an occasional air-quality alert).

Prices skyrocket and reservations are essential when tourism peaks July through September.

Southern California is a temperate area, moderated by the Pacific Ocean. In addition, mountains along the north and east sides of the Los Angeles coastal basin act as buffers against the extreme summer heat and winter cold of the surrounding desert and plateau regions.

Pasadena and the San Fernando Valley are significantly hotter than Beverly Hills or Hollywood, while coastal areas can be dramatically cooler. Late spring brings "June gloom," when skies tend to be overcast until afternoon.
