British Colonial Hilton Nassau

POINTS OF INTEREST

British Colonial Hilton Nassau

This landmark hotel is the social heart of Nassau, the setting for political meetings and the city's most important events. Guest rooms have sophisticated decor and offer unmatched views of the harbor or of old Nassau. The first Colonial Hotel, built by Standard Oil cofounder Henry Flagler in 1899, attracted socialites, royals, and industrialists at the turn of the 20th century and during the boom years of Prohibition. That building was destroyed by fire in 1921, and the present Mediterranean-style British Colonial—an exact replica—opened a year later, featuring a lustrous saffron facade, gleaming marble floors, and soaring arched ceilings. Watch for brides descending the grand staircase in the lobby on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
